چکیده

Fowler, Greenstein, and Hoyle have proposed that the inner solar system was heavily irradiated during its formation. A consequence of this proposal is that sizable differences in meteoritic and terrestrial K'3⁄4K 'ø ratios are possible if the fraction of material which was irradiated was different in the two cases. The isotopic composition of potassium was measured by mass spectrometry for nine stone meteorites, silicate from the Vaca Muerta mesosiderite and the Weekeroo Station iron meteorite, and four terrestrial samples. The measured K'3⁄4K •ø ratios were corrected by normalizing the measured K•/K • ratio to the Nier value of 13.47. This normalization procedure approximately cancels out any variations in the isotopic abundance xcept those due to nuclear processes. Measurements on enriched standards howed that any variations greater than 1% would certainly have been detected, and variations greater than •/•% would probably have been detected with replicate analyses. Within these limits, no variations in the K '• abundance between the terrestrial and meteoritic samples could be found which could be ascribed to particle irradiation in the early history of the solar system. Small K 'ø enrichments were observed in Norton County, Weekeroo Station, and Vaca Muerta; however, these appear to have been produced uring cosmic-ray irradiation by the Ca•ø(n, p) reaction. The present results set relatively strong limitations on possible mechanisms for the formation of the earth and the meteorites if the idea of a large-scale irradiation in the early history of the solar system is to be retained. Independent of the model of Fowler et al., limits have been placed on any differential uniform irradiation. The implications of the present work on the K-Ar ages of stone and iron meteorites are discussed. The possibility that iron meteorites are considerably older than the solar system as a whole appears unlikely.

Isotopic Analyses of Barium in Meteorites and in Terrestrial Samples

Isotopic compos•tien and concentration of barium in six stone meteorites and the silicate inclusions of two iron meteorites and three terrestrial samples were measured by use of a 'double spike' isotopic dilution technique in order to correct for laboratory fractionation. Any differences between the abundances of the isotopes in meteoritic and terrestrial Ba were found to be less than 0.1% for ...

Biozonation, Paleobathymetry and paleoenvironmental study of the Gurpi Formation in southwestern Iran

Planktonic foraminifera and major palynomorph groups (i.e. terrestrial, marine, and amorphous organic matter) of the Campanian-Selandian strata of the Gurpi Formation were studied to evaluate the changes in the Zagros paleobasin in southwestern Iran. Planktonic foraminifera were categorized into four morphotypes according to their paleodepth, extending from Morphotype 1, comprising surface gene...

Distribution and stable isotopic composition of amino acids from fungal peptaibiotics: assessing the potential for meteoritic contamination.

The presence of nonprotein α-dialkyl-amino acids such as α-aminoisobutyric acid (α-AIB) and isovaline (Iva), which are considered to be relatively rare in the terrestrial biosphere, has long been used as an indication of the indigeneity of meteoritic amino acids. However, recent work showing the presence of α-AIB and Iva in peptides produced by a widespread group of filamentous fungi indicates ...

GCR Neon Isotopic Abundances: Comparison with Wolf-Rayet Star Models and Meteoritic Abundances

Measurements of the neon isotopic abundances from the ACE-CRIS experiment are presented. These abundances have been obtained in seven energy intervals over the energy range of ~80<E<280 MeV/nucleon. The Ne/Ne source ratio is derived using the measured Ne/Ne abundance as a "tracer" of secondary production of the neon isotopes. We find that the Ne/Ne abundance ratio at the cosmic-ray source is a ...

High precision measurements of non-mass-dependent effects in nickel isotopes in meteoritic metal via multicollector ICPMS.

We measured the Ni isotopic composition of metal from a variety of meteorite groups to search for variations in the 60Ni abundance from the decay of the short-lived nuclide 60Fe (t(1/2) = 1.49 My) and for possible nucleosynthetic effects in the other stable isotopes of Ni. We developed a high-yield Ni separation procedure based on a combination of anion and cation exchange chromatography. Nicke...
